What it does to a run

  • Your starter is Pikachu and it can't evolve — line up a real attacker early.
  • All three Kanto starters are gifted over the game; most rulesets treat those as static encounters.
  • Gym leaders use anime teams, which makes Brock and Misty worse for a Pikachu lead, not better.

Where runs die

  • Brock and Misty back to back
  • Lt. Surge's Raichu
  • Lance

The gauntlet

The ace is the highest-level Pokémon on that team, and the cap is its level in the standard release — the number a Hardcore run caps at for that segment.
